Stories From The Drive-thru O' Life

So, it's been a hectic couple of weeks and yesterday I found myself sick (for the 2nd or so day in a row), and in the huge need of a chicken sammich from Wendy's. I like Wendy's. I like chicken sammiches. I like Wendy's chicken sammiches, so off I went. To Wendy's, for a chicken sammich.

I pull into the lot, around the building, and placed my order at the speaker and pulled around to the SECOND drive-thru window. (Why put in two if you're not going to use them?)

I get to the window, the rather large manager (never trust a skinny food joint person) told me the total and I hand him my debit card. I remembered I had also ordered my boy some nuggets and fries when he yelled out to the crew in the kitchen, "I need another half-bag down." Someone replied with, "Got it!" and I assumed we were probably talking fries. That's when it happened.

Probably a full minute after the "Got it!" I heard the same voice talking to the manager as she asked him, "Can't I just put down a whole bag?"

I immediately busted out laughing and when the manager returned with my card I put on my best I'm-shocked! face and asked, "Um, did she just call you a hoe bag?!" My face was dead serious and this guy does NOT know me and had no clue I was joking.

He gets all sqrrrrlie (not Joe Bob-like) and assured me, "Oh...no! She, she was just talking about chicken nuggets!" I busted out laughing and he totally deflated. It was great.

I'm thinking next time I go through I'll overhear "full bag", but I'll always prefer "hoe bag".

-The End (literally because diarrhea ain't no joke!)

It's like a scream in the night in the middle of the day.

In order to give Mother Nature a playful pinch on the hindquarters, I decided to take some recyclables that had accumulated and needed some relocation in order to make the landfill a little lighter. Although I dislike so many of the inhabitants that walk upon it, I am a big fan of the Earth. I wouldn't mind seeing a little more global warming in the winter, but I'm a weenie when it comes to the snow, the ice and the cold shit. As an equal opportunist, I hate the intense heat, too.

While tooling around the streets of the city, there was no way I could miss this building even though I was at a stop sign at the time. Hell, Stevie Wonder couldn't miss this building if he was driving a dragster at a high rate of speed. In a town whose collective ass is tighter and more conservative than Pat Robertson at high tide, this building is like a scream in the night in the middle of the day. It's a WTF moment just waiting to happen. It did, but I guess you've already figured that part out by now. You have a keen eye for the WTF.

As I sat there gazing at the pink nightmare, I had to agree with them that there was indeed only one way for the hot dog/wild nacho combo. This is especially true in Owensboro, Kentucky and this must be the epicenter. Having seen this place with my very own optical orbs, I cannot honestly say just what in the hell is going on there. I don't know if the "hot dog" and "wild nacho" thing is some kind of secret code for "whorehouse" or perhaps they do those Euro sex change operations for those on a tight budget - "We turn yo' hot dog into a wild nacho fo' only $99.95 plus applicable sales tax right here in the asshole of the commonwealth, Owensboro, Kentucky..." I guess it beats waiting for a boating accident or a close encounter with airplane propeller.

Now that Christmas is officially in the rearview mirror, I will just say that I think I would rather have gonorrhea than have to hear that pile of musical shite that is "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney again. My theory is that Mark David Chapman got his Beatles confused and after hearing that song what seems like 82 times this holiday season, I can definitely say that he shot the wrong one. In the outside chance that Sir Paul happens to be an avid YPS!! aficionado (and I really hope that he's not because I think he's a dick), I will just like to say a respectful "Kiss my ass" for that song and for just being a douche. Don't even get me started on Sir Elton, but I'm sure that his day will come when I hear dead blonde song again. No offense to Jose Feliciano, but that Feliz Navidad song is pretty damn annoying too. Just wish us a Merry Christmas and be done with it, champ. You really didn't have to sing about it because some shithook will try to shove it in our ears whether we like it or not. I, for one, don't like it.

Since no one else seemed to be saying these things, I had to take the reins and do it my damn self. I must admit that I'm kind of proud of myself for taking a garish Owensboro eyesore, pinching Mother Nature's ass and changing gears on the fly to ripping on crappy holiday music. While it may be a supremely gay song, I am simply having a wonderful Christmas time...wailing on the musical douchebaggery of Sir Paul.

I like Devo.

Uh, Is Your Parking Brake On?

“Oh, shit!” That was the rapid-fire exchange between my brother and me this rather chilly afternoon.

Some of you know that I don’t know shit about cars. I don’t pretend to, at all. I drive them, I put gas in them, and that’s about it. Seriously, I do good to get an oil change and replace the wiper blades. (No, I don’t change my own oil. I have a vague idea how it’s done, but I’m not about to attempt to do it on my own.)

While you may, or may not, have been aware of that, you may have been aware I initiated the planning of the ‘rents 50th Wedding Anniversary. It didn’t seem like my three MUCH older siblings were going to take up the cause, so I got us jump-started. (FIFTY years, holy shit that’s a long ass time. I haven’t even been breathing for 50 years, much less argued with a spouse for that long! Hell, I didn’t even HAVE a spouse for even a fifth amount of that time.)

Fifty years…its’ just staggering if you think about it. So anyway, I decided getting us four siblings in one room was going to be impossible. The oldest two, my brother and one of my sisters, don’t speak to each other except for on the very rare occasion. Even though this is a special occasion, I really didn’t believe they would be willing to meet and make plans. I felt like if I was going to instigate this, I was going to go about it the easiest way I could. So, it was off to the Internet with me!

At first, notifu.com seemed like the perfect tool. One of my siblings doesn’t have internet access. It would have been SO simple to type up one email message, send it to the three of them and have them reply to all, end-of-story. But with that one being out of the loop it meant I’d have to find another solution, or result to phone calls. Ick. I really don’t like to talk on the phone for extended periods of time and with both sisters, I can be guaranteed to be on the phone an hour with both. Not very time efficient with just a few months of planning time left.

Then I remembered the internetless sister does have text messaging on her cell and home phone too. So I began using notifu.com in the very beginning but as it’s a service that’s still in beta, it didn’t work for me. Then I remembered Google’s chat application started offering SMS text messaging. Bingo! Type the message, send it to three phones and wait for the replies to show up in my chat windows, or my “chats” inbox. We quickly agreed on a few things and then decided to meet in person.

In Owensboro, Kentucky on December, 21st, 2008 at 2:00pm it was cold. Very cold. I’m sure wherever you were in the country, it was cold there too. In fact, it’s just 3.5 hours later and it’s still very, very cold out. I know it was cold out at 2pm because I was entering Panera Bread Co. on my way to meet the sibs and I was shaking. I was shaking partly because I was cold and I don’t live far enough away from the food joint for my heater to get the car warm. I was also shaking because apparently through the night, my tire had gone flat. I sort of thought something was wrong when I was pulling out of the driveway when I was headed out, but they have my street torn to hell trying to improve the storm drain situation. I wasn’t sure if it was the gravel, dug grooves, or the sheets of metal I was driving over that was causing the shimmy, or if it was my front tire.

Seeing how it was 23 degrees out, it was, of course, my tire. FLAT, flat. Grrr. In Panera I go with laptop in hand and order my mocha, plan the celebration with the sibs and then back out in the cold with my brother who helps me change the tire. That’s when he asked about my parking break. It seems the car started to roll and BENT my jack. Nice.

It ended with me in my newscaster-type voice saying, “After a series of comedic events, the two brothers finally got the tire changed.” along with a chuckle from the both of us. I promptly thanked my brother by paying for the bread he promised his missus he’d pick up, and got myself another mocha (along with a turkey bravo sammich).

I left my bent hubcap in Panera Bread’s parking lot as a memento.

I even managed to talk my sibs into using a tripod and my timer on my camera to take two photos to show to the ‘rents when we tell them what we’ve been up to behind their backs. We’ll also put them in the anniversary photo album we’re going to compile on the day of the celebration.

seasons of wither

I've been told that winter has yet to officially arrive in the commonwealth, but that cold ass shit sure ain't the answer that Bob Dylan told us would be blowin' in the wind. It sure feels like winter to me. During my quality time spent watching the Weather Channel, I do realize that we're pretty lucky in Kentucky when it comes to winter. I really do not know how those poor bastards up in North Dakota do it. One wintry blast and I'd be on a tall building with a sniper rifle doing my best to take Jumpin' Jack Frost out of the game or on the first train to Miami.

At exactly 4:00 pm on Friday, December 12, I found myself on vacation until 8:00 am on January 5. I guess this is one of the perks, nay, this is the perk of working for a university. Thanks to some experimentation on their part, they gave us an additional week in order to save on utilities and instead of any form of monetary Christmas bonus. Regardless, I am not complaining in spite of the fact that vacations just remind me that I need to acquire a life worth living. I have a job and even though it sucks the life out of dying bones, it beats not having a job that deflates the morale and steals away what's left of my golden years.

With the dousing of winter precipitation, I was happy to not have to trek across the frozen tundra in order to grace the workplace with my shiny happy presence. Without the responsibilities of cleanliness and what not, I am on about day #3.5 of non-shaving and I am considering starting a ZZ Top tribute band or maybe an ice capades version of the story of Ted Kazinsky. Perhaps I will just shave. Regardless, it's good to have options.

Since I really didn't have anywhere to go or the money to get there, I haven't gone any farther than the mailbox for the last two days. During that time, I've watched a fair amount of daytime television and it confirms my theory that the only thing worse than nighttime television programming is daytime television programming. I've seen countless commercials for erectile dysfunction dope, learned where depression hurts (as if I didn't already know) , heard a variety of Free Credit Report Dot Com commercials with new jingles gayer than the previous jingles, and the obligatory updates on the Big Switch to digital TV. I'm not sure if this is just a local phenomenon or if every nook and cranny of the country is going positively bat shit over the Big Switch, but enough is enough, people. Sheesh. I also saw about two minutes too many of that douchebag Regis Philbin and his perky blonde counterpart. I felt dumber just watching a glimpse of those two pinheads.

The big project today was to remove as much of the accumulated ice on the Bonemobile. In the process, I managed to break my favorite windshield scraper which is a damn shame and a half. I went to the auxiliary scraping device with several blasts of the windshield de-icer crap and somehow managed to not only get into the ride, get it started but also got rid of the ice simultaneously fueling my hatred for winter that should carry me through the spring thaw.

I figure tomorrow may take me back to mingling with society and over to my beloved Salsarita's for a kick ass burrito with some of their equally delightful chips to slide down the digestive tract hand-in-hand or whatever a burrito and tortilla chips have to interlock. Even a lazy ass like myself can only take so much downtime before he starts getting a tad squirrely. Besides, I think I need to replenish my supply of Garden Salsa Sun Chips. How can I face the coming days without a steady supply of Sun Chips? Probably pretty easily, but I don't want to try it. Not yet.

Until the next transmission, get on the good foot and cover your rig.

out of the blue and into the black

The sun is setting on the 2008 work season and after 4:00 today, I am officially on vacation until January 5. Down-time has a way of really fucking with my head and by the time that I adjust and get used to having a shitpot of time on my hands to use and abuse, it's time to go back to work.

Anyway, this was my reward for surviving the workday yesterday without punching anyone, throwing shit, or spontaneously bursting into flames. I've also been regularly dining on leftover doughnuts and looking forward to the departure of one of the prima donna co-workers. I will not miss her attitude, her ego, or her nasally voice. To her, I say please let the door hit you on the way out as it may speed the process.

Series: In This Town, the Boomerang Edition

When I was the same age my boy is now, ten (and in the fifth grade), my best friend in the neighborhood was just two doors down. DR was a year or so younger than me, and had 3 older siblings (that I can remember), just like me. I can remember still feeling like a kid back then (and now, too), but I felt like I was more than a year ahead of him. Regardless, we were always doing stuff together.

His mom would take us all in the van and go swimming at Diamond Lakes. I can still remember the jackass on the radio wearing out the “turn so you don’t burn” phrase on the radio. I only partly enjoyed going because, like today, I couldn’t swim a single stroke. I wasn’t comfortable in water passed my chest, and stayed a great majority of the time on a float, or on the beach. In only got in the water to cool down, or to wash off my Cheetos-stained fingers. (There’s a non-swimmer bonus right there – no waiting thirty minutes after you eat to get in the water because you can’t get a tummy ache just standing.)

DR and I also used to hang out in the slim strip of land between his house and the fence. This strip was roughly twice the width of a mower, but never needed to be mowed because it was always powder dry dirt. Great stuff to be in when discussing the buying points between Hotwheels and Matchbox cars. I must admit, I was never much of a Hotwheels/Matchbox person. Oh, I liked to look at them, and collect them, but I was never much about the business of “Let’s drive over here and have an oil change before the *big* race.” Boring! These were the years of Speed Racer and Star Wars, and sorry, but for me, toy cars no longer held my imagination.

One year, just before fifth grade began (fourth for DR), we learned the news that his parents were building a new house. While he would still be going to the same school, we would no longer be neighbors. We were pretty bummed because due to the difference in age, we never saw each other in school more than just a wave-in-passing in the hallway.

As a sort of a last big hoorah, and as a way to bridge our friendship to the new location, his mother allowed him to invite me to a sleepover. Now, maybe I’m forgetting something, but until this point I don’t recall ever spending the night with another buddy. This was something new in the relationship to me, and I was nervous! Heck, I’d known these people all my life, but now I was nervous to be with them? But I went and stayed the night.

The new house was great. I can remember going over there early one evening and thinking how nice and big the new neighborhood was and for the first time realized how different things can be for people. My house had four kids, two adults and usually a pet and we were all living in a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house with a small living room, no dining room…or basement or upstairs. Now, that’s not to say we were unhappy, because we were happy. But I never realized what we didn’t have until I saw it in DR’s new house.

The next morning his mom woke me up for breakfast. She was the kind of pretty blonde mom that you’d agree to do anything for just because she was pretty. Nodding, “Yes, I’ll go home right this minute even though I just got here 5 minutes ago and we have all these toys out you nice pretty lady DR’s mom.” Seems DR was in the bathroom or something and I came on down to the kitchen. (Down! To the kitchen! I never went DOWN to the kitchen in my LIFE! My WHOLE LIFE! Stairs, and, and, EVERYTHING!)

The table was already set, milk was in the glasses and I could smell…smell…SNIIIIIFFFFFFF…Mmmmm, PANCAKES! I love me some pancakes. She motioned me to my chair and I nodded and sat down dutifully as the pretty lady DR’s mom directed, even though I didn’t care for the chair she picked out. Without thinking, I reached for my milk and took a drink.

Awe, GAWD!! WHAT was that stuff!?! It was white like milk. It clung to the glass like milk. But it sure as hell didn’t TASTE like milk. Holy cow, man! I quickly sat my glass back down and rid myself of my ‘stache so as to not draw attention that I surely must have just accidently been served somebody’s Metamucil. I’d just, uh, let it sit there and prepared my “not thirsty” speech.

Meanwhile, pretty lady DR’s mom brought over my pancakes, with DR still oddly missing. Prolly a #2 I thought, and began to dig into the pancakes even though the syrup hadn’t been poured onto my pancakes yet. One big ole scoop on the fork and chomp! Awe, GAWD!! WHAT was that stuff?! I looked around like somebody was playing a big practical joke on me. Pretty lady DR’s mom was back at the stove already, making more of these “pancakes”, whatever they were. No DR in sight. No DR giggling behind a cabinet door, or anything. I grabbed my glass of milk, GULP!! Awe, GAWD!! Not again! I drank this “milk”, AGAIN!!

Well, I must have had my nose scrunched or something as I was peeling apart these two “pancakes” because pretty lady DR’s mom asked me what was the matter. I said, “Oh, er, um, I was just uh…looking for the syrup. Yeah! I was looking for the syrup.”

And that, my friends, is when the world turned silent, and upside down, all at once. You see, after all these years, TODAY was the day I would learn something about DR’s family. And straight from pretty lady DR’s mom’s mouth.

“Syrup? Oh, we don’t have any syrup. Is that how you eat your pancakes? With syrup? We always put peanut butter on ours.”

This had not had time to sink in, at all, as I looked around to realize that now DR had appeared from the Great Dooky Land Beyond. I gave him a “that’s a fine how-do-you-do look” when he offered, “Yeah, and that ‘s why I don’t eat them.”

Stunned. I was absolutely awestruck stunned. Here, my best friend, KNEW the score. KNEW how it was all going to go down (or, in this case, NOT go down) and he withheld! My Hotwheels, swimming, and Star Wars aficionado buddy was withholding information. Great.

Just then, DR looks up at his not-so-pretty lady mom and asked, “Can I have some cold milk for my cereal?”

CEREAL?! He’s got cereal?! I’ve got these cement cakes and he’s got…what, yes! He’s got Fruit Loops!! Gah!

That’s when he’s now aged and overwrought probably-wig-wearing mother actually put ice cubes in his cereal bowl…and he thanked her! That’s when she put ice cubes in my glass of “milk”.

My heart sank. My tummy sank. My heart and my tummy, both felt betrayed. What was this new house where apparently richy rich people do the strangest of things? Ice, in cereal? Peanut butter instead of syrup for pancakes? Am I even in the right house?

Mr. Funt, are you still filming?

Fast forward to my birthday, December 8th, 2008. I’m sitting at the best Chinese food joint in town, with my boy. Like I said above, he’s ten and just happens to be in the fifth grade of the school I was going to back in like 1979.

We’re waiting on my parents to show up when I hear a voice that sort of makes me focus in. Now, the boy and I are in a booth and our backs are the wall. The next booth is empty. But the one on the other side of that has a woman with her back to us, and I couldn’t see who is on the other side but assumed it was the guy whose voice I’d just heard.

I asked my son if he could see the guy, because it sounded like a friend of mine that we ran into a couple of weeks before. He said it was definitely not my friend. I was kind of surprised, because I’m pretty good at recognizing voices of people even if I haven’t seem them for a while.

Anyway, we were talking about something, and I heard that guy say something else. I was like, I have got to see his face, because I KNOW this person. But his girlfriend’s head was right in the way. But just at that moment, he leaned and turned just enough so I could now see his right eye.

I was thinking out loud, and said, “I think that’s DR…” And my son said, “The one who puts peanut butter on his pancakes?!” I was like, “What?! How..”

“Dad! You just told me that story like two weeks ago!”

He was right. I had. He was as disgusted as I was, and he didn’t have to even taste the “milk” or the “pancakes”.

About that time, my folks arrived and sat down and I told them of my theory and they were like, “How can you be sure?”

“I, uh, heard his voice and uh…saw his…uh…eye.” And then I realized how ridiculous that was, to recognize an eyeball from 29 years ago, or whatever it was, and just dismissed the whole idea.

Sporadically throughout dinner everyone at my table kept asking, “Well…aren’t you going to go talk to him?!” like he was my jilted lover or something and I suddenly became very self-conscious. “No, no, I don’t think so. Maybe if he passes by or something, but no I’m not going over there.”

A few minutes later and I overheard him say something about his “motorcycle” and I nearly choked on my Black Pepper Shrimp. I was like, “That IS him!” Again, the jilted lover creepiness swept over, and I saw him get up and put on his jacket and walk toward the door. I gulped down my shrimp and raised my hand.

Like a fricken nervous schoolgirl I yelped, “D…R…..?”, miserably as though I both did and didn’t want it to be him.

He stopped and turned with a “Yes…” and before adding the “may I help you?” that I expected to hear he asked, “Mr. Bloggerific…Himself!?!?”

In a mix of shocking disbelief and amazement I turned red and with brilliance and utmost tact …nodded my head slowly with an Elvis-like curled lip. I couldn’t even shake his hand correctly! I grabbed his right hand with my left hand in an awkward “we-don’t-shake-hands-like-you-dirty-Americans” and I felt my hand go all girly and limp.

There he was, DR. Decades had gone by since the Breakfast Incident as if I’d ripped open my skull, located some of my oldest memories, and snatched him from the powdered dust in the narrow strip between his house and the fence and placed him right in the aisle of the House of Canton. It was both cool and unnatural at the same time. I was outside of my body looking down on this table of four with a leather clad man standing next them. All of them looking on with great big Anime WTF eyes. Blinking. Blinking.

In an instance I was back in my body fumbling with the “Sooooo! How have you been?” Trying to remember if he was Hotwheels or Matchbox, and frankly, which one had I been.

We all spoke fondly about the old days for all of 6-7 minutes. I could see on his face that he felt the same “this is neat-o and all, but awkward and I’m ready to leave, RIGHT NOW”. I made another failed attempt at shaking his hand, with the correct hand this time, but we both knew that I’m just not a good handshaker. We both joked that we hoped it wouldn’t be another 20 years before we saw each other again, but after he left I pointed out to my table that it was closer to 30 years.

So long, DR! Long may you ride into the peanut-butter-pancake-sunset!

Never mind the wiseassity, here's the sincerity.

With most birthday posts, you get shots of asses, boobs, and random bits of vulgarity. We’re vulgar gents by nature. It’s what we do. And at the risk of sounding rather cocky, I think we do it rather well, too. So rather than go with the tried and the true, this is breaking new ground. I’m going out on the thin ice in hopes of delivering the goods…Sincerity!

The patrons of YPS!! know the man as Mr. Bloggerific. For more years than I care to admit, I’ve known the birthday boy as a friend. He’s the kind of friend that any person is lucky to have on their side in good times, bad times and times in between. What you get on YPS!! is only a fraction of the picture of the man himself. Funny? Well yeah. Great father? Definitely. Red Hots Connoisseur? Indeed.

I’ve been fortunate enough to share a wealth of countless bad jokes, off-color remarks, genius ideas, less-than-genius ideas (yet funnier than a sack of lepers), and things that just completely defy categories and would likely only make others scratch their heads in a total moment of WTF?. In other words, if you think the YPS!! material is out there, you can’t begin to imagine the stuff that even we think is just a little too out there. The point is that these are the moments that make life a little less savage and a lot more tolerable. I know that my own life would suck vigorously without moments of laughing at the puss of one of God’s creatures, cackling hysterically at a Subway drive-thru window because the co-pilot was ridiculing my sandwich selection’s fashion sense, or questioning whether Tom Waits is actually saying “Pussy on down” in song.

So in closing, I encourage you all to lift a box of Red Hots (the big box, not that lightweight, tiny ass shit) in a toast to the one and only Mr Bloggerific and as we say what has become the tradition, ‘round the table you must go, it’s…your birthday!!

Oh what the hell. What would a birthday post be without a picture of a couple of boobs.

Shake it, shake it!!

Open Letter to Marie Callender

Dear Marie,

Marie, Marie, Marie. You sweet temptress, Marie. Oh Marie, Mistress of Microwavable Goodness!!

I am a simple(ton) man. I wake, I decaffeinate, I eat, I eat, I eat, I snack, and then I sleep. That's it, that's all. It's all I know, it's all I do, it's all I want. I go through life with blinders on, and a feedbag tied on for good measure. Each day, I aim for the finish line, only to find out I'm not a good mudder.

That is, until, the day came when I was in the frozen foods section of Kroger and I saw you. There you were peeping out at me, beckoning me. Taunting me. Tempting me. "Take me!" you pleaded, and I did.

After all, how could I resist you? Your firm breasts. It was as if you were filled with the finest of stuffing, and decorated with jewels that glistened like cranberries. In fact, your packaging said so, "Turkey Breast with Stuffing" and clearly visible in the photo (mixed up with those icky green bean things) were...cranberries! Mmmmmm.

I bought just one for, you see, I've been "burned" by frozen foods before. I told myself, "they're all alike, those frozen foods". Sure they're appealing enough on the exterior, but on the inside? Freezer burn and no taste! No texture! And green beans in the brownies!! Wrong.

I took you home, ripped off your packaging and read every instruction - I wanted our first time to be just right. I put a slit in your wrapping and we began to cook. Later I would fully remove your covering and mix your potatoes. Mmmm. I would turn your breasts. OH! I would...stir your beans and cranberries, baby. OH MY!!

And put you back in for 2-3 minutes.

And then, BING!, you were done. All hot and steamy and full of LOVE.

From then on, it was just you, and me. So, please baby please, don't change. Keep it real, keep it right. Keep your proportions, keep your recipe, keep your cooking time - just like they are. It's perfection baby, and it's GOOOOOOOOOOOOD.

Smoochies,
Bloggy

blah blah blah.

Since my inspiration is paper-thin these days and there is no way that I can really top the sharing of the preacher wealth, here's some Cheap Trick. Dig it, baby.

And if you look really closely on a frame-by-frame kind of deal, you still can't see me but I am lurking in the crowd ...

and a bad ass bonus with Uncle Dick in all of his glory.
